Cricket: DW vs CRS

Cricket: DW vs CRS

The Dixon Wilson cricket team’s first outing of the season concluded in a thrilling run chase that saw us fall short by 10 runs against arch rivals Charles Russell Speechlys.

This year, for the first time, the team have relocated to the scenic location of Fulham’s South Park, where the inaugural inter group tournament is due to take place on 7th June.  Despite the pitch’s unique characteristics of being 2 yards too long and the outfield resembling a military obstacle course, the team took to the field in high spirits.  Along with some experienced heads, 4 players made their debuts: Paddy Thornton, Alex Browne, Kieran Paulas and Milo Fabian.

Having been sent out to field, a strong opening spell from Mark Williams left CRS on the back foot.  Oli Jennings led from the front with the best bowling figures and talking point of the game with a decapitation attempt on the CRS captain.  Unfortunately the supporting acts left perhaps a touch to be desired with extras coming in as top scorer for CRS with a mighty 41.  A mention must go to a spectacular direct hit run out from Rory McKenna with a piece of textbook fielding that saw him gather and shy at the stumps all in one elegant movement.

Having been set a gargantuan 175, the team went out with an aggressive mind set with stand out performances coming from Milo Fabian, Mark Edridge and Harry Croft, all getting the maximum 25 prior to retirement.  Unfortunately despite best efforts the team fell just short, managing a valiant 165 but unable to clinch it at the death.

Whilst a disappointing result, it was good to see plenty of familiar faces at CRS and the game played in a great spirit.  Perhaps a nets session may be required prior to next week’s titanic battle with Rathbones where the President of DWCC is due to enter the fray!
